The meaning of Service!Today customers expect top quality, reasonable prices and fast service. Graphic designing is no exception to this hard and fast rule. Last minute jobs that need to be out tomorrow are electronically submitted the day before. Sometimes this leaves a graphic designer with the daunting task of designing what the customer is trying to convey, and unfortunately they need it the next day. This is a fact all too obvious when searching the employment section; the job description of a graphic designer will typically include the description: "graphic designer must be able to work under tight deadlines!" Designing todayMost graphic designers will agree, typically the job will arrive with little time to spare. Part of Designing Today means designing an ad, direct-mail piece, trade-show presentation, or web site, with speed. In an odd sort of way these tight deadlines are an adrenaline rush. The designer is pushed to the limit of their ability. Fingers are dancing and actions are playing as the CPU tries to keep up with the crazed graphic artist who cuts, pasts, drag and drops as the ideas start to fly. As the momentum builds a color scheme emerges from the monitor, the typography begins to take shape and the designer lets a smirk cross their face. Service with a smirkFor every logo, brochure, billboard and trade-show booth there is a smirk that goes along with it. For some, graphic designing and web designing are as much about the deadline as it is about the design. The rush and excitement of breaking through to understanding the client's vision with enough time to complete the project will always bring a smirk across my face.
